Nutrition & IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a relatively common diagnosis, affecting 1-2 people in every ten in the UK. Indeed, many of my breast cancer patients have ongoing gut symptoms post treatment, and many report that it was pre-existing. Unfortunately, this label describes the situation rather than helping the sufferer find a resolution. Many people just believe it is something they must learn to cope with, and often live alongside a residual fear that any meal may trigger symptoms. Such anxiety can not only restrict social activities but could also be limiting absorption of nutrients from the diet. Living with ongoing bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhoea can be miserable and debilitating. It is not unusual for me to see clients with severely restricted diets, whilst still experiencing symptoms. Many clients have tried excluding FODMAPs but never moved on from what should only be a short-term diet. Avoiding these groups of carbohydrates in the long-term can have a detrimental effect on your microbiome.
I will help you work out what might be driving your symptoms, whether it be lactose intolerance, allergies, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), histamine intolerance, coeliac disease or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, lack of fibre, lack of physical exercise, or stress. Gut symptoms can be multifactorial, so I’ll be talking a whole person approach to your symptoms to help you become gut distress free.
